Breast Cancer

Breast cancer, also known as breast carcinoma is the most common type of cancer affecting women and the most common cause of death in women between the ages of 45 and 55. It affects 12% of female population during their lives. It affects glandular breast tissue. Man can also develop this type of cancer but its very rare.
Anyway breast cancer is one of the oldest known types of cancer and the fifth most common cause of cancer death. Developing of this disease among humans is rising every day.

There are eight main forms of breast cancer:
- Ductal carcinoma;
- Lobular carcinoma;
- Papillary carcinoma;
- Colloid carcinoma;
- Medullary carcinoma of the breast;
- Metaplastic carcinoma;
- Inflammatory breast cancer;
- Triple Negative Breast Cancer.

Although all factors that increase the risk of breast cancer aren't discovered yet, the main are combination of environmental, genetic and hormonal. The risk is higher if woman is older. Risk is also increased in cases of overweight (especially after menopause), alcohol, having children after the age of 35 or not having children at all, hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, increased levels of estrogen, smoking, radiation (as treatments for other cancers). Although some studies do not support this, some scientists believe that abortion is one of the factors.
Science discovers new possible causes every day and some of the active themes are abortion (although there are studies that do not support this), using deodorants (antiperspirants) because they contain aluminum salts that can be related to estrogen.
It may sound unbelievable but there is also study claiming that too much artificial light during night can be a factor.

Early symptoms of breast cancer are breast pain (mastodynia) and small, painful lump under the breast skin that does not go away. It can also be associate with inflammation of skin, where cancer causes inflammatory condition of the local skin, causing pain, warmth, swelling and redness.
Also different changes of breast shape and/or nipple can be indicator.
Very important thing about these symptoms is that they are usually not connected with breast cancer so its wrong to make conclusions, without medical examination. There are many other disorders (less dangerous then breast cancer) including similar symptoms.
Finding breast cancer early is very important because then its most treatable, so regular self-examination of breast is highly recommended.

There are a lot of prevention treatments that can reduce risk in cases of high-risk individuals. Some of those treatments are:
- prophylactic oopherectomy (removal of ovaries)
- non - hormonal treatments (using non-hormonal biphosphonates in form of pills)
- hormonal treatments
- prophylactic mastectomy

Breast cancer can be diagnosed by examination of breast tissue, screening (X-ray mammography), breast MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) and breast ultrasound.
The most common types of breast cancer treatments are:
- surgery - after localization of tumor. It can consists of removing lump only or lump with larger amounts of tissue (lumpectomy), or removing entire breast (mastectomy);
- hormonal therapy - with tamoxifen or aromatase inhibitor);
- chemotherapy - drug treatment;
- radiotherapy - exposing to X-rays or gamma rays (XRT).
